Service Description

Advocating for a child with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) or Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) can feel overwhelming. Meetings with schools, local authorities, and professionals are often filled with unfamiliar terminology and complex procedures. Many parents worry their concerns will not be taken seriously or that they lack the legal knowledge to ensure their child’s needs are met. Without the right guidance, families sometimes accept inadequate support, leading to long-term challenges in their child’s education. At JLW Consultancy, our Parent Advocacy Services give parents the confidence, knowledge, and tools to represent their child effectively. We help you prepare for crucial meetings, navigate legal requirements, and stand firm on your child’s rights. Our support includes: • Preparation for key meetings — helping parents clarify concerns, organise evidence, and plan clear talking points. • Coaching on communication and negotiation — ensuring parents can advocate firmly yet constructively. • Attendance at meetings — providing virtual or in-person support to strengthen your voice. • Protecting legal rights and entitlements — making sure schools and local authorities meet statutory duties. • Guidance on complaints, appeals, and dispute resolution — supporting parents if issues escalate. Frequently Asked Questions • What is parent advocacy? It ensures a child’s educational rights are protected and their needs properly supported. • How can I prepare for a school or authority meeting? We help organise documentation and practise effective communication. • Can someone attend meetings with me? Yes — we can join virtually or in person where possible. • What if my child’s needs are ignored? We guide you on gathering evidence and escalating concerns if necessary. • Are there legal protections for children with ALN/SEND? Yes — the ALN Code (Wales) and SEND Code of Practice (England) outline statutory responsibilities. • Can I request independent assessments? Absolutely — we help identify reputable professionals if school assessments fall short. • How do I know if advocacy is working? Together we track progress through meeting notes, agreed actions, and improvements in support. By offering specialist advocacy services, we empower parents to navigate complex education systems with confidence.
