Service Description

The Additional Learning Needs (ALN) system is designed to give children and young people the right support when mainstream education alone isn’t enough. But for many families, understanding the process can feel daunting. Complex terminology, multiple assessment stages, and evolving legislation — especially with Wales’ transition from the SEN to ALN framework — often leave parents unsure of their rights and next steps. Without clear information, children may miss out on vital interventions, and parents can find themselves facing long delays or decisions that don’t meet their child’s needs. At JLW Consultancy, our ALN Process Guidance service makes the system transparent and manageable. Through flexible online consultations, we explain every stage of the ALN process and empower parents to secure the right support at the right time. We provide: • Step-by-step explanations of the ALN framework — including legal rights, terminology, and available provisions. • Guidance on requesting assessments and obtaining an IDP or EHCP — ensuring needs are formally recognised. • Support with school communication — helping parents present evidence and advocate effectively. • Advice on appeals and dispute resolution — giving families the confidence to challenge decisions when necessary. • Resources and practical strategies — so parents can navigate the process independently and with confidence. Frequently Asked Questions • What’s the difference between ALN and SEND? SEND applies in England, ALN in Wales — both outline rights to specialist support. • How do I know if my child needs ALN support? If they face ongoing learning, communication, or behavioural challenges beyond peers, an assessment may be appropriate. • What is an Individual Development Plan (IDP)? A legally binding plan that sets out the support and adaptations your child is entitled to. • How can I request an assessment? Submit a written request to the school or local authority with evidence of your child’s needs. • What if I disagree with a decision? You can challenge it through formal appeals or by requesting further assessments. • Can schools refuse support? Schools must provide appropriate interventions and follow statutory guidance — we explain how to ensure compliance.
