Service Description

Moving from one stage of education to the next—such as from primary to secondary school or from secondary to further education—is a big step for children and their families. New routines, different expectations, and changing social groups can all feel daunting. For children with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) or Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), these changes can be even more challenging. They may need carefully planned support to adapt to new learning environments, teaching styles, and peer groups. Our Transition Support Service provides structured guidance to make every move as smooth and positive as possible. We help families to: • Understand key changes in curriculum, expectations, and school routines at each stage. • Prepare children emotionally and academically, building confidence and reducing anxiety. • Work with schools to create a transition plan, ensuring all staff are aware of individual needs. • Address concerns early, so children and parents feel ready for the first day and beyond. Frequently Asked Questions • What challenges do children face when changing schools? Adjusting to new routines, making new friends, and adapting to different teaching methods are common concerns. • How can I help my child settle into a new school? Discuss the changes openly, visit the school if possible, and establish routines to give a sense of security. • What’s important when moving from primary to secondary school? Helping your child get used to larger settings, multiple teachers, and new subjects is key. • Is there specific support for ALN/SEND pupils? Yes — schools must provide transition planning and reasonable adjustments. • How do I collaborate with my child’s school? Schedule meetings, share relevant documents (such as IDPs or EHCPs), and maintain ongoing communication. • What social or emotional issues might arise? Some children experience anxiety or low confidence, which we address with coping strategies and resilience-building activities. • How can I build my child’s confidence? Encourage independence, celebrate small successes, and model a positive attitude toward change. • What resources are available? We can recommend guides, checklists, and local or online support groups for parents and pupils. • What should I look for in a new school? Consider curriculum, pastoral care, ALN/SEND support, and the overall school culture.
